Goapele

Goapele Mohlabane is an R&B and soul singer, songwriter, and producer from Oakland, California, born in 1977. Her name, pronounced gwa-puh-lay, means "to move forward" in Setswana, reflecting her mixed South African and Jewish-American heritage. After studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, she returned home to the Bay Area and independently released her debut album, «Closer», in 2001. The title track built a grassroots following that led Columbia Records to pick up distribution, reissuing the record with additional songs as «Even Closer» in 2002.

Goapele's sound blends classic soul and R&B vocal warmth with the loose, jazz-inflected sensibility of Bay Area hip-hop, a scene she has stayed closely tied to throughout her career. She has collaborated with local hip-hop acts and producers including members of Hieroglyphics, E-40, Zion I, and Mac Mall, while also working with artists like Snoop Dogg, Dwele, and Mos Def. Songs such as «First Love», «Play», and «Milk & Honey» expanded her catalogue across several independently released albums following her major-label period.

Beyond music, Goapele has been recognized for activism rooted in the example of her politically engaged parents, receiving the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights' inaugural Human Rights Cultural Hero Award in 2006. Her career reflects a consistent independent-artist path, built through community ties in Oakland's music scene rather than mainstream pop crossover, making her a respected figure in Bay Area neo-soul and R&B.
