About the artist
Girlpool was an American indie rock duo from Los Angeles, formed in 2013 by guitarist and vocalist Avery Tucker and bassist and vocalist Harmony Tividad. The pair became known for a raw, stripped-down early sound built on interlocking guitar and bass with no drums, and for tightly woven, unison vocal harmonies that gave their songs an intimate, almost diaristic quality. Tracks like «Cut Your Bangs» and «Before the World Was Big» captured the plainspoken emotional directness that defined their early work and drew comparisons to the DIY and riot grrrl lineage of American indie rock.
Over successive albums the band's sound evolved considerably, incorporating drums, fuller arrangements, and more expansive production while retaining the close vocal interplay between Tucker and Tividad. Songs such as «Cherry Picking», «Chinatown», «123», «It Gets More Blue», «American Beauty» and «Ideal World» trace that arc from lo-fi minimalism toward a more layered, textured indie rock and pop sound, with Tucker's voice also deepening over time.
Girlpool built a devoted following within American indie rock for their honesty and evolving songcraft before announcing their breakup on August 25, 2022. Their catalog remains a touchstone for fans of intimate, guitar-driven indie music that moved fluidly between minimalist folk-punk roots and more polished later work.
