About the artist
George R. R. Martin is an American author best known as the creator of «A Song of Ice and Fire», the sprawling fantasy saga adapted by HBO as «Game of Thrones». Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, he began writing as a child and sold his first professional story, «The Hero», while still in college. He built a career across short fiction, novels, and television before «A Game of Thrones», the first volume of his saga, appeared in 1996 and redefined modern epic fantasy.
Martin's fiction is known for its morally complex characters, unpredictable plotting, and willingness to kill off major figures, breaking from the genre's traditional hero-driven narratives. Passages from the novels, including character speeches and prologues, have taken on a life of their own among fans for their vivid rhetoric and political intrigue. Before his fantasy breakthrough, he worked extensively in television, including as story editor on «The Twilight Zone» and in various producing roles on «Beauty and the Beast».
Over his career Martin has won multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards for his short fiction, including for the novella «A Song for Lya» and the novelette «Sandkings». He remains one of the most influential figures in contemporary fantasy, having shaped how television and literature approach large ensemble casts and morally ambiguous storytelling.
