Genesis

Genesis are an English rock band formed in 1967 by pupils at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey, including Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel and Anthony Phillips. After early singles arranged by former pupil Jonathan King, the band evolved through lineup changes — most notably the addition of drummer/singer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett — into one of the defining acts of 1970s progressive rock, known for sprawling, theatrical compositions and Gabriel's elaborate costumed stage performances.

Albums like the ones featuring «Supper's Ready» and «Dancing with the Moonlit Knight» established Genesis as pioneers of ambitious, narrative-driven art rock. Following Gabriel's departure in 1975, Collins stepped forward as lead singer, and through the late 1970s and 1980s the band steadily shifted toward a more accessible pop and rock sound, with Banks, Rutherford and Collins forming the band's most commercially successful lineup and producing hits such as «Follow You Follow Me», «That's All», «Land of Confusion», «Invisible Touch» and «Jesus He Knows Me».

Across a career spanning fifteen studio albums, Genesis became one of the best-selling rock acts of all time and one of the few bands to achieve major success in two distinct musical eras and styles. Members Gabriel, Collins, Banks, Rutherford and Hackett also built significant solo careers, cementing the band's outsized influence on both progressive and mainstream rock.
