About the artist
Garbage is an alternative rock band formed in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1994, bringing together producer Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker with Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson. Vig, already celebrated for his production work on landmark 1990s rock records, wanted to move from behind the boards into a band built around dense, studio-driven arrangements, and the trio found their missing piece in Manson's sultry, cutting vocal presence.
The band's sound fuses guitar-based alternative rock with electronic textures, layered samples, and glossy studio polish, paired with dark, sardonic lyrics often delivered with a knowing detachment. Their 1995 self-titled debut was an unexpected commercial success, and the follow-up, Version 2.0, cemented their reputation and earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. The band also contributed the theme song to the James Bond film «The World Is Not Enough», further raising their profile at the turn of the millennium.
Subsequent releases, including Beautiful Garbage and Bleed Like Me, saw the band navigate shifting industry conditions and internal tension while continuing to explore their signature blend of pop hooks and abrasive edges. Songs like «Only Happy When It Rains», «Stupid Girl», «I Think I'm Paranoid», and «Special» remain defining tracks of 1990s alternative rock, and the band has continued to record and tour well into the 2000s and beyond.
