Gang of Four

Gang of Four are an English post-punk band formed in 1976 in Leeds, built around vocalist Jon King, guitarist Andy Gill, bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. They emerged from the same art-school and punk milieu as contemporaries like Wire and The Fall, but fused the raw aggression of punk with the rhythmic discipline of funk and dub, producing a sound that was danceable yet confrontational.

Gill's guitar style became one of the most influential in post-punk: jagged, percussive, almost anti-melodic, deliberately avoiding rock-guitar cliché in favor of scraping chords and sudden silences. Songs like «Damaged Goods», «At Home He's a Tourist» and «Natural's Not in It» paired this abrasive sound with lyrics that dissected consumerism, alienation and power relationships through a Marxist-influenced, almost sloganeering lens, delivered in King's clipped, urgent vocal style.

Their debut album «Entertainment!» (1979) is widely regarded as a foundational post-punk record, and the band's rhythm-forward, guitar-as-texture approach left a direct mark on later acts across funk-punk, dance-rock and alternative rock, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party, who have cited them explicitly as an influence.
