fun. is an American indie pop band formed in New York City in 2008, built around Nate Ruess, formerly of The Format, alongside Andrew Dost (previously of Anathallo) and Jack Antonoff (previously of Steel Train). The trio combined orchestral, theatrical arrangements with pop songwriting, creating a sound that felt both intimate and stadium-sized, marked by Ruess's distinctive tenor and dense, layered production.

After their 2009 debut Aim and Ignite established their sound, the band broke into the mainstream with Some Nights (2012), powered by the singles «We Are Young» (featuring Janelle Monáe), «Some Nights», and «Carry On». «We Are Young» in particular became a defining hit of the era, propelled in part by a cover performed on the television show Glee, and topped charts internationally. The album's blend of anthemic choruses, unconventional structures, and emotionally direct lyrics distinguished fun. within the broader indie-to-mainstream pop wave of the early 2010s.

Following the success of Some Nights, the band went on an extended hiatus starting around 2015, with each member pursuing solo and side projects — Ruess released solo material, Antonoff found further success as a member of Bleachers and as an in-demand producer and songwriter, and Dost pursued additional musical ventures. Despite the hiatus, fun.'s catalog, particularly Some Nights, remains a touchstone of 2010s pop-rock songwriting.
