Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand are a Scottish rock band formed in Glasgow in 2002, built around the songwriting partnership of Alex Kapranos and Bob Hardy alongside Nick McCarthy and Paul Thomson in the original lineup. Emerging from the city’s art-school scene, the band quickly became one of the defining acts of the early-2000s post-punk revival, marrying angular guitar riffs and danceable rhythms with sharp, art-conscious lyrics and a strong visual sensibility drawn from Kapranos and Hardy’s design backgrounds.

Their 2004 single «Take Me Out» became a global breakthrough, its abrupt tempo shift and instantly recognizable riff turning it into one of the decade’s defining indie rock anthems and helping their self-titled debut album win the Mercury Prize. Subsequent records continued to explore the intersection of art-rock rigor and pop hooks, and songs like «Do You Want To» and «The Dark of the Matinée» cemented their reputation for wit and stylistic precision.

The band has evolved considerably over two decades, most notably following Nick McCarthy’s 2016 departure, after which Julian Corrie and Dino Bardot joined, and later Paul Thomson’s exit led to Aubrey Tait taking over on drums. Franz Ferdinand also collaborated with veteran art-pop duo Sparks on the joint project FFS, further reflecting the band’s ongoing interest in genre-crossing experimentation alongside their core indie and post-punk identity.
