Fontaines D.C.

Fontaines D.C. are an Irish post-punk band formed in Dublin in 2014, when the five members met as students at the city's BIMM Music Institute. The lineup consists of Grian Chatten on vocals, Conor Curley and Carlos O'Connell on guitars, Conor Deegan III on bass and Tom Coll on drums. Their name references the crooning Jonny Fontane character from The Godfather, with the «D.C.» — standing for Dublin City — added after discovering a Los Angeles band already using the name The Fontaines.

The band emerged from Dublin's literary-minded post-punk scene, drawing on poetry and a strong sense of place in their lyrics, delivered through Chatten's distinctive deadpan, half-spoken vocal style over tense, driving guitar interplay. Early singles such as «Boys in the Better Land» established their reputation for restless, socially observant songwriting, while later work like «I Love You», «Jackie Down the Line» and «Favourite» showed a broadening palette that folds in more melodic and electronic textures alongside their raw guitar attack.

Songs including «Starburster», «Bug», «In the Modern World» and «Roman Holiday» reflect the band's continued evolution from tightly wound post-punk toward a more expansive, atmospheric sound, while retaining the urgency and literary edge that defined their early work. Fontaines D.C. are widely regarded as one of the leading bands of the recent Irish post-punk revival.
