Faith No More

Faith No More formed in San Francisco at the turn of the 1980s, evolving from earlier lineups (Sharp Young Men, then Faith No Man) into the band anchored by bassist Billy Gould, drummer Mike Bordin, and keyboardist Roddy Bottum. After cycling through singers and guitarists, they scored a college-rock hit with «We Care a Lot» under vocalist Chuck Mosley, but his eventual departure opened the door for Mike Patton, formerly of Mr. Bungle, whose arrival reshaped the band entirely.

With Patton's elastic, genre-defying voice and guitarist Jim Martin's heavy riffing, Faith No More became one of the defining acts of alternative metal, fusing funk, hip-hop, hardcore, lounge, and pop into a sound that resisted easy classification. Albums like The Real Thing and Angel Dust are considered landmarks of the era, pairing aggressive, jarring shifts in tone with surprisingly melodic and even absurdist songwriting — songs such as «Epic», «Midlife Crisis», and «Easy» showcase that range.

The band's refusal to settle into a single genre made them hugely influential on the nu-metal and alt-metal bands that followed, even as they themselves resisted the label. Internal tensions and the pull of members' side projects eventually led to their split in the late 1990s, though their catalog remains a touchstone for musicians drawn to boundary-crossing rock.
