About the artist
Everything but the Girl are an English duo formed in 1982 in Hull by Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, who met while both studying at Hull University. Taking their name from a furniture-shop advertising slogan, they began as leading figures of the sophisti-pop and lite-jazz scene, pairing Thorn's warm, understated alto with Watt's melancholic songwriting and guitar work. Early records like «Night and Day» and «Each and Every One» established a smoky, jazz-inflected pop sound indebted to bossa nova and torch-song traditions.
Over the 1980s the duo expanded into folk, soul, and orchestral pop, but it was their embrace of electronic and dance production in the mid-1990s that transformed their career. The 1994 remix of «Missing» by Todd Terry became a global club and radio hit, reintroducing the group as pioneers of the fusion between introspective songwriting and house and drum and bass textures, most fully realized on the album Walking Wounded.
Everything but the Girl went on hiatus after 1999 while Thorn and Watt, also a couple, focused on family and solo projects, before reuniting decades later for new material. Their catalog remains notable for bridging literate British pop songwriting with dancefloor sensibility, influencing a generation of electronic-pop crossover acts.
