Everything but the Girl é uma dupla inglesa formada em 1982 em Hull por Tracey Thorn e Ben Watt, que se conheceram enquanto estudavam na Universidade de Hull. O nome veio de um slogan publicitário de uma loja de móveis, e a dupla começou como figura de destaque do sophisti-pop e do lite-jazz, unindo a voz contralto calorosa e contida de Thorn às composições melancólicas e à guitarra de Watt. Faixas iniciais como «Night and Day» e «Each and Every One» firmaram um som pop enfumaçado com influências de bossa nova.
Ao longo dos anos 80 a dupla se expandiu para o folk, o soul e o pop orquestral, mas foi a aproximação com a produção eletrônica e dançante em meados dos anos 90 que transformou sua carreira. O remix de «Missing» feito por Todd Terry em 1994 tornou-se um hit global de pistas e rádios, reapresentando o grupo como pioneiro na fusão entre a canção introspectiva e as texturas house e drum and bass, mais plenamente realizada no álbum Walking Wounded.
Everything but the Girl entrou em hiato após 1999, enquanto Thorn e Watt, também um casal, se dedicaram à família e a projetos solo, reunindo-se décadas depois com material novo. Seu catálogo permanece notável por unir a canção pop britânica literária à sensibilidade das pistas de dança.
