About the artist
Elvis Costello (born Declan Patrick MacManus in 1954) is an English singer-songwriter who emerged from the British pub rock and new wave scenes of the late 1970s and has continued evolving across genres ever since. His early work with his backing band the Attractions produced sharp, literate, and often venomous songs that combined punk-era urgency with pop songcraft, establishing him as one of the era's most incisive lyricists.
Over the decades Costello has moved fluidly between rock, country, soul, and orchestral pop, refusing to be confined to any single style. He has built an extensive catalog of collaborations that reflect this restlessness, working with figures as varied as Burt Bacharach, Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint, T-Bone Burnett, the Roots, and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, alongside albums with the Attractions and later the Imposters, the band he formed after a lineup change in the mid-1990s.
Known for both his caustic wit and his melodic ambition, Costello remains one of the most versatile and prolific songwriters to emerge from the new wave generation, respected as much for his genre-crossing curiosity as for the sharp-edged classics that made his name.
