About the artist
Elliott Smith (born Steven Paul Smith, August 6, 1969 – October 21, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter celebrated for pairing delicate, intricately layered melodies with unflinchingly dark lyrics about depression, addiction, and isolation. Raised largely in Texas before relocating to Portland, Oregon as a teenager, he first gained attention as a member of the rock band Heatmiser before turning to a hushed, home-recorded solo sound built around whispered vocals and finger-picked acoustic guitar.
His early albums Roman Candle and the self-titled Elliott Smith established his signature intimacy, while Either/Or, named after the Kierkegaard text, is often regarded as his creative peak. A high-profile boost came when «Miss Misery» was featured in the film Good Will Hunting and earned an Academy Award nomination. Signing to DreamWorks, he expanded his sound on XO and Figure 8, layering Beatles-esque orchestration and multi-tracked harmonies over his folk foundations.
Smith's music remains a touchstone of introspective indie songwriting, influencing generations of singer-songwriters drawn to his combination of melodic beauty and emotional rawness. He died in 2003 under circumstances generally understood as suicide, with his unfinished album From a Basement on the Hill released posthumously.
