Sobre el artista
Elliott Smith (nacido Steven Paul Smith, 6 de agosto de 1969 – 21 de octubre de 2003) fue un cantautor estadounidense reconocido por combinar melodías delicadas y minuciosamente elaboradas con letras crudas sobre depresión, adicción y aislamiento. Criado principalmente en Texas, se trasladó a Portland, Oregón, en su adolescencia, donde comenzó en la banda de rock Heatmiser antes de dedicarse a un sonido íntimo grabado en casa, con voz susurrada y guitarra acústica punteada.
Sus primeros discos, Roman Candle y el homónimo Elliott Smith, definieron ese estilo intimista, mientras que Either/Or, título tomado de la obra de Kierkegaard, suele considerarse su punto más alto. Alcanzó notoriedad más allá del circuito indie gracias a «Miss Misery», incluida en la película El indomable Will Hunting y nominada al Óscar. Al firmar con DreamWorks, amplió su sonido en XO y Figure 8, incorporando armonías multipista y arreglos orquestales de inspiración beatle.
Su obra sigue siendo referencia del songwriting introspectivo dentro del indie, influyendo en numerosos artistas posteriores. Murió en 2003 en circunstancias que se entienden generalmente como suicidio; su álbum inconcluso From a Basement on the Hill se publicó de forma póstuma.
