Ella Jenkins

Ella Jenkins was an American folk singer, songwriter and educator widely regarded as one of the most important figures in children's music. Working primarily through the Smithsonian Folkways label, she built a career spanning more than half a century, releasing dozens of albums aimed at introducing young listeners to call-and-response singing, world rhythms and multicultural song traditions.

Her performances emphasized participation over passive listening, inviting children to clap, chant and answer back, a style rooted in African American musical traditions and folk pedagogy. Songs such as «Miss Mary Mack», «The Muffin Man» and «Wade in the Water» became staples of classroom and family music, prized for their simplicity and warmth as much as their educational value.

Jenkins also drew on Jewish, African and other global musical traditions, reflected in songs like «Shabbat Shalom», underscoring her lifelong commitment to using music as a bridge across cultures.
