Eels

Eels is the project of American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, known as E, formed in Los Angeles in 1995 after a run of low-key solo albums. Backed by rotating musicians in the studio and on tour, Eels quickly established a signature sound blending scuffed indie rock, melancholic piano balladry, hip-hop-inflected beats and dry, self-deprecating humor.

The band broke through with 1996's «Beautiful Freak», powered by the alt-rock hit «Novocaine for the Soul», and deepened its emotional range on 1998's «Electro-Shock Blues», written largely in the aftermath of family tragedy and widely regarded as a landmark of confessional indie songwriting. Later records like «Daisies of the Galaxy» and «Blinking Lights and Other Revelations» balanced fragile intimacy with bursts of noisy rock energy, while Everett has also written film scores and a memoir.

Over three decades Eels has remained almost entirely Everett's vision, prized for its ability to move from gallows humor to raw grief within a single song, and it continues to record and tour with a loyal audience that spans indie rock, alternative radio and film-soundtrack listeners alike.
