Eddie Vedder

Eddie Vedder, born Edward Louis Severson III on December 23, 1964, in Evanston, Illinois, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist best known as the frontman of Pearl Jam, one of the defining bands of the Seattle grunge movement. He began playing guitar as a teenager and spent his early twenties singing in several California bands before a demo tape reached him through Jack Irons of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Vedder wrote lyrics and vocal melodies over the instrumental tracks in a matter of days, and the songs became «Alive», «Once», and «Footsteps», leading to his invitation to join the fledgling Seattle band that became Pearl Jam in 1990.

Vedder's baritone voice, marked by emotional intensity and a distinctive vibrato, became one of the most recognizable in rock music, and his introspective, socially conscious lyrics helped define Pearl Jam's sound across three decades of albums and relentless touring.

Beyond Pearl Jam, Vedder has cultivated a respected solo career, often drawing on folk, ukulele-based, and Americana influences quite different from his band's arena rock. He composed the acoustic soundtrack for Sean Penn's film Into the Wild, earning a Golden Globe, and released the intimate solo album Ukulele Songs. He has also collaborated with artists across genres and remains an active voice in environmental and political causes.
