About the artist
Dying Fetus are an American death metal band formed in 1991 in Annapolis, Maryland. Frontman John Gallagher has remained the group's driving creative force across every lineup change and release since the band's inception, giving Dying Fetus an unusually consistent identity over more than three decades of activity.
The band's sound blends technical, riff-driven death metal with the blast beats and abrasive intensity of grindcore, built around tight, hook-laden song structures and heavy breakdowns. This combination made them one of the acts credited with popularizing the slam death metal movement, with slamming, groove-heavy passages present as far back as their earliest demo material. Lyrically, the band is distinguished within the genre by reality-based, political and social commentary rather than the horror or fantasy themes common in much of death metal.
Dying Fetus has also served as something of a family tree for the American extreme metal scene: former members went on to found Misery Index and, separately, Criminal Element. Gallagher has said the band's deliberately provocative name was chosen when the members were teenagers. Decades on, the group remains a touring and recording fixture of the death metal underground.
