About the artist
Drug Church are an American hardcore punk band formed in Albany, New York, active since the mid-2000s and fronted by Patrick Kindlon, who also leads the band Self Defense Family. The group built a reputation within the American hardcore and post-hardcore underground for pairing fast, riff-driven guitar work with lyrics that take a sardonic, observational look at social anxiety, self-image, work culture, and the absurdities of everyday life, avoiding the genre’s more common political or straightforwardly aggressive themes.
Unusually for a hardcore band, Drug Church’s writing process has the instrumentals composed first, with Kindlon adding lyrics afterward in response to the finished music, giving the songs a wry, narrative quality that stands apart from typical hardcore lyricism. Musically the band draws on classic hardcore and 90s alternative and noise-rock textures, resulting in songs that are compact and hook-laden while still carrying an abrasive edge.
Over several albums the band steadily expanded its audience beyond hardcore circles, drawing acclaim from indie and alternative rock press for songs that felt as much like short stories as they did punk anthems, cementing Drug Church as one of the more distinctive and crossover-friendly acts to emerge from the American hardcore scene in the 2010s.
