Dishwalla

Dishwalla is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in the early 1990s. The group came together around singer-songwriter J. R. Richards, whose warm, expressive vocals became the band's signature, alongside guitarist Rodney Cravens, bassist Scot Alexander, keyboardist Jim Wood, and drummer George Pendergast. Their name is drawn from a Hindi term referring to a person who installs or maintains satellite television dishes, a quirky choice that hinted at the band's offbeat sensibility even as their sound stayed firmly within the melodic, guitar-driven alternative rock of the mid-1990s.

The band's breakthrough came with «Counting Blue Cars», a reflective, philosophically tinged single from their 1995 debut album that became a radio staple and climbed into the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100. Its distinctive lyric, questioning ideas of faith and gender in the divine, set it apart from typical rock radio fare and gave Dishwalla a lasting cultural footprint, even as it became their only major crossover hit, leading many to file them under the one-hit-wonder label.

Beyond that signature song, Dishwalla continued releasing music through the late 1990s and 2000s with songs like «Somewhere in the Middle» and «Every Little Thing», maintaining a devoted fanbase within the alternative and adult album alternative radio formats. Richards departed in the mid-2000s, and the band continued in various lineups afterward, but the mid-90s incarnation remains the one most closely associated with their identity and legacy in the alternative rock landscape.
