Dire Straits

Dire Straits were an English rock band formed in 1977 by brothers Mark and David Knopfler, alongside John Illsley on bass and Pick Withers on drums. Emerging in London during the height of the punk movement, the band offered a strikingly different sound rooted in blues, country, and folk-influenced rock, anchored by Mark Knopfler's fingerpicked guitar style and laconic, storytelling vocals.

Their debut single «Sultans of Swing» established the band's signature sound and became an international hit, launching a career that would produce a string of acclaimed albums. The band's popularity peaked with «Brothers in Arms», which included the groundbreaking, MTV-friendly single «Money for Nothing» and became one of the best-selling albums of the 1980s, showcasing the group's polished production and Knopfler's increasingly sophisticated guitar work.

Often categorized as pioneers of what came to be called roots rock, Dire Straits built a reputation for musicianship over spectacle, with tracks like «Romeo and Juliet», «Walk of Life», and «Telegraph Road» reflecting their range from tender balladry to extended, guitar-driven compositions. The band released six studio albums before dissolving in the mid-1990s, after which Mark Knopfler pursued a prolific solo and soundtrack career, while the group's catalog remains a touchstone of classic rock radio.
