Dion

Dion, born Dion Francis DiMucci in 1939 in the Bronx, New York, rose to fame in the late 1950s as leader of Dion and the Belmonts before launching an equally successful solo career. His music fused doo-wop harmonies with rhythm and blues grit, giving him a sound rooted in street-corner vocal groups but polished enough for mainstream pop radio.

As a solo artist he scored a run of hits that defined the turn from the 1950s into the 1960s, including «Runaround Sue» and «The Wanderer», both swaggering, up-tempo numbers that became touchstones of early rock and roll. He continued to chart into the mid-1960s and later showed his range with the socially conscious «Abraham, Martin and John», a reflective ballad that stood apart from his earlier uptempo hits.

Over a recording career spanning decades, Dion placed 30 songs on the Hot 100, and his catalog has remained a durable reference point for doo-wop and early rock and roll, continuing to resonate with listeners well beyond the era in which it was recorded.
