About the artist
Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Oslo, formed in 1993. Their name comes from Dimmuborgir, a volcanic lava field in Iceland whose name means «dark cities» or «dark fortresses» in Old Norse. Vocalist Shagrath and guitarist Silenoz are the band's founding members and have remained its constant core through numerous lineup changes, later joined by longtime lead guitarist Galder.
The band helped define the symphonic black metal sound, pairing extreme, blast-beat-driven black metal with orchestral arrangements, choirs, and keyboards, moving from the raw aggression of early albums like «Enthrone Darkness Triumphant» toward a grander, more cinematic production on records such as «Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia» and «Death Cult Armageddon». This fusion of brutality and orchestral grandeur made them one of the genre's most commercially successful and internationally recognized acts.
Key releases across their catalog include «Stormblåst», «Spiritual Black Dimensions», «In Sorte Diaboli», and «Abrahadabra», with songs like «Puritania» and «Progenies of the Great Apocalypse» standing among their best-known tracks. Dimmu Borgir remain one of the most influential bands to bring black metal to a wider, mainstream metal audience.
