About the artist
DIIV is a band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2011 by Zachary Cole Smith, originally as his solo recording project. Naming it Dive after the Nirvana song, Smith assembled a live lineup including guitarist Andrew Bailey and bassist Devin Ruben Perez, changing the name to DIIV in 2012 out of respect for the Belgian industrial band Dive. The project grew out of the same jangly, shoegaze-adjacent Brooklyn scene as Smith's other band, Beach Fossils.
DIIV's sound layers interlocking, arpeggiated guitar lines over driving rhythms, drawing on post-punk, shoegaze, and dream pop touchstones. Their debut album, «Oshin», established this hypnotic, guitar-forward style, while later records like «Is the Is Are» and «Deceiver» pushed toward denser, heavier textures and more explicitly personal, often difficult lyrical territory tied to Smith's struggles with addiction.
Over the years DIIV built a devoted following in indie and alternative rock circles for their intricate guitar interplay and atmospheric production, becoming a notable name in the 2010s revival of shoegaze-influenced indie rock alongside contemporaries in the Brooklyn scene.
