Devo

Devo is an American new wave band formed in Kent, Ohio, in the early 1970s, built around the concept of «de-evolution», a satirical idea that humanity, rather than progressing, was regressing into conformity and mindless consumption. Founding members Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, both students at Kent State University, shaped the project as much as visual and conceptual art as music, wrapping sharp social satire in matching uniforms, robotic choreography, and deliberately artificial-sounding synthesizers and guitars.

The band’s breakthrough came with «Whip It» in 1980, a jerky, synth-driven single and one of the defining early MTV-era hits, but their catalog runs deeper into skewed, angular takes on rock and pop convention, from the twitchy «Uncontrollable Urge» and «Jocko Homo» to «Freedom of Choice», which mocked consumer culture even as it produced some of their most enduring pop hooks. Their sound paired stiff, mechanical rhythms with genuinely catchy melodies, a combination that made them equally influential on synth-pop and on later art-punk and alternative acts.

Devo’s branding, from the flowerpot-shaped «energy dome» hats to their absurdist merchandising, was itself part of the satire, a tongue-in-cheek send-up of the commercialism they were critiquing, which has made them as recognizable visually as musically and secured their place as one of new wave’s most conceptually rigorous acts.
