Dethklok

Dethklok is a virtual death metal band created by animator and musician Brendon Small as the fictional centerpiece of the Adult Swim animated series Metalocalypse. Within the show, the band is portrayed as the most commercially successful musical act in the world, despite the members' extreme dimwittedness, a satirical exaggeration of both metal excess and celebrity worship.

Musically, the project is no joke: Small, a trained guitarist, writes and performs technically demanding death and thrash metal in earnest, often with contributions from prominent metal musicians, resulting in albums that work as legitimate genre entries rather than parody music. Tracks like «Murmaider», «Awaken» and «Face Fisted» combine over-the-top, comically brutal lyrics with genuinely accomplished musicianship.

The project extended beyond the show itself, with Dethklok touring live using virtual projections of the animated band members alongside a real backing band, and building a dedicated fanbase that engages with the music on its own terms, independent of the series' comedic framing.
