Desmond Dekker

Desmond Dekker was a Jamaican singer and songwriter, one of the founding figures of ska and one of the artists who carried Jamaican music to international audiences before reggae itself had a name. Born in Kingston, he began recording in the early 1960s, initially auditioning for producers alongside a young Bob Marley, and quickly became one of the most successful vocalists on the island.

Backed by his group The Aces, Dekker had a run of major Jamaican hits including «007 (Shanty Town)», which chronicled the rude-boy culture of Kingston's streets, and «Israelites», a song rooted in Rastafarian imagery of struggle and faith that became a global crossover smash, topping the UK charts and reaching the US Top 10 — a rare feat for a Jamaican artist at the time. Other well-loved tracks such as «It Mek», «Fu Man Chu» and «Intensified» showcased his warm, distinctive tenor and knack for melodic, socially observant songwriting that bridged ska, rocksteady and early reggae.

Dekker's success helped open doors in Britain and the United States for the artists who followed him, and he continued performing and recording for decades, later touring with backing bands including The Rumour. He remains remembered as a pioneer whose songs helped define the sound and spirit of Jamaican popular music in its formative years.
