Derek and the Dominos

Derek and the Dominos were a short-lived blues rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and singer Eric Clapton, keyboardist and singer Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle, and drummer Jim Gordon, all of whom had previously played together backing Delaney & Bonnie. Guitarist Dave Mason contributed to early sessions and their first live show. The band's sole studio album, «Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs», stands as one of the defining works of Clapton's career, though it sold modestly and received little radio play upon its 1970 release.

The album's centerpiece, «Layla», was inspired by Clapton's unrequited love for Pattie Boyd, then married to his close friend George Harrison, and features searing slide guitar contributions from Duane Allman, whose interplay with Clapton became legendary. The song did not reach the top ten in the US and UK until it was rereleased in March 1972, well after the band had already split. Tracks like «Bell Bottom Blues» and «Thorn Tree in the Garden» further reveal the raw emotional intensity and blues-rock craftsmanship that ran through the record.

Despite recording only one album before dissolving amid substance abuse and interpersonal tension, Derek and the Dominos left a lasting mark on rock music, with «Layla» widely regarded as a landmark achievement blending blues rock guitar work with deeply personal songwriting.
