About the artist
Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968, widely regarded — alongside Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin — as one of the founding acts of heavy metal and hard rock. Their classic Mark II line-up featured Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on organ, Roger Glover on bass and Ian Paice on drums, a combination that produced the band’s most celebrated records in the early-to-mid 1970s.
The band’s sound was built around the interplay between Blackmore’s aggressive guitar riffing and Lord’s heavily distorted Hammond organ, an unusual pairing that gave Deep Purple a heavier, more classically inflected texture than most of their peers. This is best heard on «Highway Star», «Burn» and their signature anthem «Smoke on the Water», whose four-note riff became one of the most recognizable in rock history.
Over more than five decades and numerous line-up changes, Deep Purple continued releasing albums into the 21st century, including «Perfect Strangers» era comeback material, while remaining a fixture of arena and festival rock. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, cementing their place as one of the genre’s essential pioneers.
