Death in June

Death in June is a pioneering neofolk group led by English musician Douglas Pearce, known as Douglas P., formed in London in 1981. Originally a trio alongside Patrick Leagas and Tony Wakeford, both of whom left in the mid-1980s to pursue Sixth Comm and Sol Invictus respectively, Death in June evolved into essentially a solo vehicle for Douglas P. working with a rotating cast of collaborators. The project grew out of the post-punk and industrial scene, and along with acts like Current 93, it helped define the neofolk genre.

The band's sound blends acoustic guitar, martial drums and Douglas P.'s deep, brooding baritone with apocalyptic, melancholic and often provocative imagery, drawing on themes of mortality, mythology and controversial military and occult iconography that have made the group a subject of ongoing debate. Signature tracks such as «All Pigs Must Die», «Rose Clouds of Holocaust» and «Runes and Men» showcase this stark, ritualistic folk sound, set apart from mainstream rock and pop by its minimalist arrangements and somber tone.

Over the decades Douglas P. has worked with figures from adjacent underground scenes, including John Balance of Coil and David Tibet of Current 93, cementing Death in June's central place in the neofolk and industrial underground. Though he has stepped back from touring, Douglas P. has continued releasing new material, including the 2018 album Essence!, maintaining the project's influence on generations of dark folk and experimental artists.
