Dead Kennedys

Dead Kennedys are one of the most influential and confrontational bands to emerge from American hardcore punk, formed in San Francisco in the late 1970s. Fronted by the sardonic, theatrical vocals of Jello Biafra, the band paired fast, surf-tinged punk riffs with East Bay Ray's distinctive guitar twang and lyrics that skewered American consumerism, political hypocrisy, and the rise of the Reagan-era right.

Songs like «Holiday in Cambodia», «California Über Alles», and «Kill the Poor» became genre landmarks for fusing sharp social satire with genuine musical inventiveness, while tracks such as «Nazi Punks Fuck Off» and «Too Drunk to Fuck» showed the band's willingness to provoke both political opponents and the punk scene itself. Their 1985 album Frankenchrist landed them in an obscenity trial over included artwork, a case that became a touchstone in debates over music censorship in America.

The band split in the mid-1980s, and its legacy became further complicated by a bitter legal dispute between Biafra and his former bandmates over royalties, after which the surviving members reformed and continue to perform without him. Despite the discord, Dead Kennedys' original run remains a foundational influence on punk, hardcore, and politically engaged rock more broadly.
