DC Talk

DC Talk was an American Christian hip-hop and rock trio formed in 1987 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. The group consisted of Toby McKeehan (later known as tobyMac), Michael Tait, and Kevin Max, who blended rap, rock, and pop into a sound that helped define contemporary Christian music in the 1990s. Signed to Forefront Records, they became one of the genre's most commercially successful acts, crossing over into mainstream visibility while keeping explicitly faith-centered lyrics.

Their breakthrough came with the album Jesus Freak (1995), whose title track and songs like «What If I Stumble?» and «Colored People» showcased a heavier rock direction than their earlier rap-driven records. Earlier hits such as «Jesus Is Just Alright» and «In the Light» (later reworked by Newsboys) helped establish them as pioneers of merging secular-sounding production with overtly Christian themes, opening doors for Christian artists to reach wider radio audiences.

DC Talk disbanded amicably in 2000 during what the members called «The Intermission» so each could pursue solo careers. Toby continued as tobyMac with a successful pop-rap solo run, Michael Tait fronted the rock band Tait and later joined Newsboys as lead singer, and Kevin Max pursued a solo alternative career. The trio has reunited periodically for live performances, and their catalog remains foundational to the CCM and Christian rock genre.
