D'Angelo

D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer on February 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia, is regarded as one of the founding architects of the neo-soul movement. Raised in a Pentecostal household with his father as minister, he began playing piano at age three, and the gospel tradition of the church became a lasting foundation for his musicianship. He moved to New York in the early 1990s, performed at the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night, and signed with EMI Records in 1993, launching a solo career that would fuse classic soul with hip-hop sensibility.

His sound draws on the smooth soul of Al Green, the raw intensity of James Brown, the jazz-inflected hip-hop of A Tribe Called Quest, and the eccentric funk-rock of Prince, Jimi Hendrix, and Sly Stone. Songs such as «Brown Sugar», «Lady», «Untitled (How Does It Feel)» and «Send It On» showcase his falsetto-driven vocals, dense multi-tracked harmonies and deep pocket grooves, often built alongside longtime collaborator Raphael Saadiq. Tracks like «Devil’s Pie» and «Spanish Joint» further reflect his genre-blurring instincts, mixing jazz, funk and hip-hop production.

D’Angelo’s influence extends across a generation of artists including Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, Bilal and Frank Ocean, all of whom carry forward elements of the neo-soul sound he helped define. Rolling Stone placed him among the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time, cementing his reputation as both a vocalist and a genre-defining producer-multi-instrumentalist whose meticulous, deeply musical approach shaped the sound of contemporary R&B.
