About the artist
Dance Gavin Dance is an American post-hardcore band formed in 2005 in Sacramento, California. The group became known for an unusually restless lineup, especially around its clean vocalists, which repeatedly reshaped the band’s sound across its discography. Songs such as «We Own the Night», «Uneasy Hearts Weigh the Most» and «Chucky vs. The Giant Tortoise» showcase the band’s signature contrast between harsh screamed verses and melodic, often falsetto-driven choruses, layered over intricate, technical guitar work from Will Swan.
Core members have included unclean vocalist Jon Mess, guitarist Will Swan, drummer Matt Mingus and, in more recent years, Andrew Wells on guitar and clean vocals. Tilian Pearson became one of the band’s most associated clean vocalists during a lengthy tenure, following earlier singers including Jonny Craig and Kurt Travis, whose respective eras are often cited by fans as distinct chapters of the band’s evolution. Bassist Tim Feerick, who passed away in 2020, remains honored by the band as a member in spirit.
Musically, Dance Gavin Dance blends post-hardcore aggression with elements of pop, funk, and progressive rock, giving their catalog a genre-crossing identity rare among their peers. Members have also pursued side projects such as Secret Band, Royal Coda and Wolf & Bear, further extending the band’s creative footprint. Their willingness to experiment while maintaining a recognizable sonic signature has made them one of the more influential and enduring acts to emerge from the mid-2000s post-hardcore scene.
