Curtis Mayfield

Curtis Mayfield (1942–1999) was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer from Chicago, one of the most influential figures in soul and funk music. He first rose to prominence as leader of The Impressions in the late 1950s and 1960s, writing anthems of the Civil Rights era such as «People Get Ready» and «Keep on Pushing» that fused gospel-rooted harmonies with direct social messages.

After going solo around 1970, Mayfield became a pioneer of politically conscious, socially aware soul, using his distinctive falsetto and intricate, syncopated guitar style over lush orchestral funk arrangements. His 1972 soundtrack for the film Superfly, featuring «Pusherman», «Freddie's Dead (Theme From Superfly)» and the title track, is considered one of the greatest blaxploitation-era soundtracks and a landmark of narrative-driven concept albums, addressing drug addiction and urban poverty rather than glamorizing the film's content.

Tracks like «Move On Up», «(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go» and «We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue» cemented his reputation as a songwriter unafraid of political commentary. His work profoundly shaped funk, hip-hop and neo-soul, and he is cited as a direct influence on artists ranging from Bob Marley to countless later soul and rap musicians who sampled his catalog.
