Current Joys

Current Joys is the primary recording project of Nicholas Rattigan, an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Reno, Nevada, who is also known as the drummer and co-vocalist of the surf-punk band Surf Curse. Rattigan began recording lo-fi bedroom music as a teenager using basic home equipment, initially under the moniker The Nicholas Project, before rebranding as Current Joys around 2013 with the release of his debut, «Wild Heart».

His music blends jangly, reverb-drenched guitars with hazy, intimate vocals, drawing on influences that range from 1960s pop and garage rock to darker, more atmospheric indie textures. Records like «A Different Age» and later releases pushed his sound toward more polished, cinematic arrangements while retaining the raw emotional directness that defined his earliest work. Songs such as «Kids», «Fear», and «Symphonia IX» exemplify his knack for combining melancholic melodies with a distinctly DIY sensibility.

Beyond his solo output, Rattigan's dual role in Surf Curse has made him a notable figure in the broader surf-rock and indie revival scenes, with tracks like «Freaks» achieving viral popularity years after release. Current Joys has cultivated a devoted following drawn to its diaristic songwriting, bedroom-pop aesthetics, and Rattigan's distinctive, homemade approach to recording and visual presentation, including his own music videos.
