About the artist
Current 93 is a British experimental band centered on David Tibet, a key figure in the London underground scene who had earlier worked with Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. Since the early 1980s the project has evolved from harsh, ritualistic noise and industrial experimentation into one of the founding acts of neofolk, blending acoustic guitars, apocalyptic and mystical lyrics, and a shifting cast of collaborators drawn from the British underground and beyond.
Tibet's writing draws heavily on Christian and Gnostic mysticism, apocalyptic imagery, English folk and children's-song traditions, and personal, often unsettling visions, delivered in his distinctive half-sung, half-spoken voice. Songs such as «All the Pretty Little Horses» and «The Bloodbells Chime» sit alongside longer, hymn-like pieces that established a sound intimate in feel even as its themes remain dark and focused on apocalypse and mortality.
Over more than three decades Current 93 has worked with a wide range of musicians associated with the neofolk, industrial and experimental music worlds, cementing its reputation as one of the genre's most influential and prolific acts, continuing to record and perform well beyond the era in which it emerged.
