Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Crosby, Stills & Nash formed in 1968 as a folk-rock supergroup uniting David Crosby (formerly of the Byrds), Stephen Stills (formerly of Buffalo Springfield) and English singer Graham Nash (formerly of the Hollies). Their self-titled 1969 debut album introduced their signature intricate three-part vocal harmonies and earned them a reputation as one of the era's defining acts, performing at Woodstock shortly after the album's release. Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young soon joined as a frequent fourth member, and the group became known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young for their 1970 album Déjà Vu.

The band's music blended folk, rock and country influences with rich acoustic and electric textures, and their songwriting often reflected the political and social upheavals of the era — most notably «Ohio», Young's response to the Kent State shootings. Other enduring songs include «Our House», «Teach Your Children», «Carry On» and «Woodstock», a cover of Joni Mitchell's song about the festival.

Marked by frequent lineup changes, breakups and reunions over the following decades, the group nonetheless left a lasting influence on American music through its harmony-driven songwriting and blending of folk sensibilities with rock instrumentation. All four members were separately inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for earlier work, and Crosby, Stills & Nash were inducted as a group, cementing their place among the most celebrated harmony groups in rock history.
