Crosby, Stills & Nash

Crosby, Stills & Nash formed in 1969 when three seasoned musicians decided to join forces: David Crosby, who had left The Byrds, Stephen Stills, coming off the breakup of Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash, formerly of the British group The Hollies. Their combined pedigree, plus an unmistakable gift for intricate three-part vocal harmony, made them one of the defining acts of the late-1960s Laurel Canyon scene, and the group is often described as a low-key supergroup rather than a conventional band.

Their 1969 debut album introduced a warm, acoustic-leaning sound built around close harmonies and confessional songwriting, epitomized by songs like «Suite: Judy Blue Eyes» and «Helplessly Hoping». The record won them the Grammy for Best New Artist and helped open the door for a wave of singer-songwriters who followed a similar introspective path. Neil Young later joined for a period, expanding the group into Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Over the following decades the trio worked together intermittently, releasing records such as «CSN» and continuing to tour, with songs like «Southern Cross» and «Wooden Ships» remaining staples of their live shows. Their emphasis on vocal blend over flash cemented their influence on folk-rock and soft rock songwriting for generations after them.
