Crash Test Dummies

Crash Test Dummies are a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, fronted by the deep, distinctive baritone of songwriter Brad Roberts. Formed in the late 1980s, the group built a sound rooted in folk-inflected rock, offbeat storytelling and dark, literate humor, standing apart from the grunge and alt-rock dominating North American radio in the early 1990s through sheer vocal and lyrical eccentricity.

Their 1993 album «God Shuffled His Feet» made them global stars, propelled by the hit single «Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm», a nonsensical yet oddly moving chorus paired with verses about childhood trauma and disfigurement that became inescapable on radio and MTV worldwide. The record also produced «Afternoons & Coffeespoons» and «The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead», the latter a tribute to Julian Cope. Earlier, their debut «The Ghosts That Haunt Me» had already introduced their signature blend of folk-rock instrumentation and Roberts' unmistakable vocal delivery.

While the band never fully replicated that commercial peak again, they continued releasing albums into the 2000s and 2010s, retaining a loyal following drawn to their idiosyncratic songwriting. Crash Test Dummies remain best remembered as one of the most distinctive one-hit-adjacent acts of the 1990s, a band whose singular vocal texture and wry lyricism made them impossible to mistake for anyone else on the radio.
