Courteeners

Courteeners are an English indie rock band formed in 2006 in Middleton, Greater Manchester, led by singer, guitarist and chief songwriter Liam Fray. Emerging in the wake of the mid-2000s British indie boom alongside acts like Arctic Monkeys and Kaiser Chiefs, the band built a devoted, largely northern English following through anthemic guitar hooks and lyrics rooted in everyday working-class life, heartbreak, and hometown pride.

Their debut album St Jude, released in 2008, became a landmark for the group, spawning singles such as «Not Nineteen Forever» and «What Took You So Long?» and establishing Fray’s conversational, diaristic songwriting style. Follow-up records including Falcon, Anna, and Concrete Love continued to mix melodic indie rock with bigger, more anthemic production, and the band became known for enormous, singalong live shows, culminating in major outdoor gigs at Heaton Park in Manchester.

While lineup changes have occurred over the years, most notably bassist Joe Cross replacing original member Mark Cuppello, Fray, drummer Michael Campbell and guitarist Daniel «Conan» Moores have remained the band’s core. Courteeners occupy a distinctive space in British indie rock as a band whose loyal, largely regional fanbase and stadium-scale live reputation have outpaced their broader critical profile.
