Clutch

Clutch are an American rock band formed in Germantown, Maryland, in 1991, now based in nearby Frederick. The lineup — Neil Fallon on vocals and rhythm guitar, Tim Sult on lead guitar, Dan Maines on bass and Jean-Paul Gaster on drums — has remained unchanged for over three decades, an unusual stability in rock. Their sound fuses stoner rock riffing, blues and Southern groove with hardcore-punk roots and funk-inflected rhythm section work, anchored by Fallon's booming, half-shouted, half-sung baritone and surreal, literate lyrics that range from Americana folklore to conspiracy theory and pulp fiction.

Across more than a dozen studio albums the band has moved from the noisier hardcore of their early records toward the riff-driven, groove-heavy style that defined classics like «Blast Tyrant» and later «Earth Rocker». Songs such as «Electric Worry», «The Regulator» and «Spacegrass» became live staples and helped Clutch build one of rock's most devoted cult followings without significant radio support.

In 2008 the band launched its own label, Weathermaker Music, giving them full control over recording and releases; «Book of Bad Decisions» (2018), produced by Vance Powell at Sputnik Sound in Nashville, is a product of that independence. Decades of relentless touring and a reputation as a formidable live act have made Clutch a benchmark of American heavy rock outside the mainstream.
