Christian Death

Christian Death is a Los Angeles band widely regarded as one of the founding acts of deathrock, the darker, more theatrical American offshoot of goth and punk that emerged in the early 1980s. Formed in 1979 around vocalist Rozz Williams, the band's original lineup coalesced through Southern California's punk scene, with guitarist Rikk Agnew joining in time for the 1982 debut album Only Theatre of Pain — a record now treated as a cornerstone of the genre for its fusion of punk aggression, gothic atmosphere and theatrical, provocative imagery.

After Williams departed, guitarist Valor Kand took over as the band's driving creative force, steering Christian Death through the rest of the 1980s and beyond with a sound that leaned further into gothic rock and industrial textures while keeping the band's confrontational, ritualistic stage presence intact. Kand has remained the band's constant across numerous lineup changes over the decades, with vocalist and bassist Maitri Nicolai becoming his longtime musical partner.

The band's influence runs through much of the deathrock and goth-rock scenes that followed, and songs like «Romeo's Distress» and «Deathwish» are still cited as genre touchstones. Later work, including tracks such as «Spiritual Cramp» and «Cavity - First Communion», shows the band continuing to explore dark, atmospheric rock decades into its history.
