Charly García

Charly García, born Carlos Alberto García in Buenos Aires in 1951, is one of the most important figures in the history of Spanish-language rock. He rose to prominence in the early 1970s as founder of Sui Generis, a folk-rock duo with Nito Mestre, before founding the more ambitious progressive-pop band Serú Girán in the late 1970s alongside David Lebón, Pedro Aznar and Oscar Moro.

As a solo artist from the 1980s onward, García became known for restless experimentation, moving through new wave, synth-pop and hard rock while remaining a sharp lyrical chronicler of Argentine politics and society, particularly during and after the military dictatorship. Songs like «Los Dinosaurios» and «No Bombardeen Buenos Aires» carried explicit political weight, while «Demoliendo Hoteles» and «No Voy en Tren» reflected his flamboyant, provocative public persona.

He also pursued an unfinished collaborative project with fellow rock icon Luis Alberto Spinetta, which yielded the single «Rezo por Vos». Widely regarded as a foundational songwriter and producer of Argentine and Latin American rock, García's catalog — spanning solo albums, soundtracks and collaborations — has shaped generations of musicians across the Spanish-speaking world.
