Чайф (Chaif)

Чайф (Chaif) is a Russian rock band formed in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) in 1985, one of the defining acts of the Sverdlovsk rock scene that also produced Nautilus Pompilius and Agata Kristi. The band has been fronted continuously since its founding by singer and guitarist Vladimir Shakhrin, who writes most of its material.

Musically Chaif combines classic Russian guitar rock with folk-tinged melody and, at times, rap-inflected delivery, and their songs cover everyday life, love, nostalgia and social observation in a plainspoken, unpretentious style that made them broadly accessible beyond the underground rock audience. Tracks like «17 лет», «Оранжевое настроение» and «Аргентина — Ямайка 5:0» became staples of Russian rock radio through the 1990s and 2000s.

Across four decades the band has remained one of the most consistently active and recognizable names of post-Soviet Russian rock, continuing to tour and release music while retaining its original frontman, a rare continuity among bands from its generation.
