Carissa's Wierd

Carissa's Wierd were an indie rock band formed in Seattle in the mid-1990s, built around songwriters Mat Brooke and Jenn Ghetto, whose intertwined, hushed vocals became the group's signature. Over a series of albums released through the late nineties and early two-thousands, the band developed a quiet, melancholic sound rooted in slow tempos, spare arrangements and confessional, often bleak lyrics, placing them alongside the more introspective corners of the era's American indie and slowcore scenes rather than the louder guitar-rock associated with Seattle's earlier reputation.

The band released a handful of albums and singles, including work put out through Sub Pop, before splitting in the early two-thousands. Their farewell was documented on a posthumous live release, and unreleased material later surfaced as well, giving fans a fuller picture of a catalog that had circulated mostly among a devoted cult following during the band's lifetime.

Carissa's Wierd's lasting significance comes largely through what its members did afterward: Jenn Ghetto continued recording as S, while Mat Brooke, together with bandmate Ben Bridwell, went on to co-found Band of Horses, carrying some of the same emotional intensity into a much larger commercial platform. This afterlife has made Carissa's Wierd a touchstone reference point for the Pacific Northwest indie scene of the 2000s.
