About the artist
Car Seat Headrest is an American indie rock project led by singer-songwriter Will Toledo, who began writing and recording music alone in the back seat of his car in Leesburg, Virginia, self-releasing a prolific string of lo-fi albums on Bandcamp starting in the late 2000s. This DIY period built a devoted underground following before the project signed to Matador Records in 2015.
Toledo's songwriting is marked by sprawling, confessional lyrics, shifting song structures, and a raw, guitar-driven sound that draws on lo-fi indie rock, punk, and classic rock influences. The breakthrough album Teens of Denial and its predecessor Teens of Style established Car Seat Headrest as one of the defining indie rock acts of the mid-2010s, praised for their emotional candor and ambitious, often lengthy compositions.
The band later revisited its back catalog with re-recorded editions, such as Twin Fantasy (Face to Face), and continued to evolve its sound on albums like Making a Door Less Open, incorporating electronic elements alongside its guitar-based roots. Car Seat Headrest remains known for its restless creative energy and Toledo's distinctive, diaristic approach to songwriting.
