About the artist
Canned Heat are an American blues rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965 by singer and harmonica player Bob Hite and guitarist and vocalist Alan Wilson, both passionate blues record collectors who assembled a group dedicated to reviving and reinterpreting classic American blues. Their name comes from Tommy Johnson's 1928 song «Canned Heat Blues», a nod to their deep roots in prewar blues tradition. The band quickly became known for extended boogie jams built on a hypnotic, driving groove, with Wilson's falsetto vocals and slide guitar work becoming a signature sound.
Canned Heat rose to national prominence with their performance at the Woodstock festival in 1969, one of the defining moments of the era, and with hit singles «On the Road Again» and «Going Up the Country», the latter built around a flute-like guitar line that became an anthem of the counterculture movement. Their music blended electric blues, boogie rock, and elements of folk and country, distinguishing them from many of their psychedelic rock contemporaries through a stripped-down, groove-focused approach.
The band suffered early tragedy with the death of Alan Wilson in 1970 and later Bob Hite in 1981, but Canned Heat continued performing and recording with various lineups in the decades that followed. They remain influential as one of the key acts that brought traditional blues to a mass rock audience in the late 1960s, and their boogie style left a lasting mark on blues rock and jam band traditions.
