About the artist

Can were a German experimental rock band formed in Cologne in 1968, among the founders of the Krautrock movement alongside Neu! and Faust. The lineup coalesced around composers Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay, guitarist Michael Karoli and drummer Jaki Liebezeit, whose hypnotic, motorik grooves became the band's rhythmic backbone. Early vocalist Malcolm Mooney gave the group a raw, improvisatory edge before Japanese street musician Damo Suzuki took over the microphone in 1970, steering Can toward the extended, trance-like jams that defined their most celebrated period.

Albums such as «Tago Mago», «Ege Bamyasi» and «Future Days» fused free improvisation, funk rhythm, tape editing and studio experimentation into a sound unlike anything in rock at the time, drawing on Schmidt and Czukay's classical training under Karlheinz Stockhausen as much as on rock and funk. Tracks like «Vitamin C», «Halleluwah» and «Mother Sky» show the band's gift for stretching a simple groove into hypnotic, ever-shifting soundscapes.

Can's influence reaches far beyond Krautrock, shaping post-punk, ambient, electronic and art-rock artists for decades. Members later worked with figures ranging from Brian Eno to various film composers, and the band's studio-as-instrument approach anticipated much of modern electronic production.
